3 Simple Steps to Get Your Style Together By Christmas

Halloween has come and gone. Thanksgiving is in two weeks. I don’t know about you, but I’m in the thick of it—”it” being that busy-not-enough-hours-in-the-day feeling that comes with this time of year. If you’re already stressing about your holiday outfits or winter wardrobe, you’re not alone.

Without fail, time kicks into warp speed the day after Halloween, and suddenly we’re racing through the holiday season and everything that comes with it—from planning holiday outfits to packing for travel.

Naturally, I’m already thinking about what I’ll be wearing. Last year I stuck with a streamlined color palette for my holiday wardrobe, which made it even easier to dress for dinners, date nights, parties and family gatherings. I’ll likely repeat that strategy this year.

When you think about what’s on your calendar for the next few months and what you’ll be wearing, how do you feel about your holiday style?

If the answer is anything but effortless, let’s fix that.

Here are 3 simple steps you can take starting today to get your style together by Christmas:

  1. Start your holiday closet edit by removing one piece from your wardrobe.

That’s it, just one piece—the one you always skip over every time you get dressed. It doesn’t fit. You don’t even like it. It still has the tags on it because it doesn’t work with anything else in your closet. It needs to be hemmed (and you know it never will be). It has a stain.

Whatever the reason, it’s time to get it out of your closet. Donate, sell or recycle it—just don’t put it back in your closet.

Sometimes, that small bit of space is all you need to see the good stuff that’s been there all along.

Make me your accountability partner. Leave this tab open in your browser until you’ve done it, then comment below and tell me what you got rid of.

2. Get inspired, not overwhelmed.

My style guides for midlife women are full of inspirational looks for work, weekend and everything in between. Chances are, you can recreate some of the looks with pieces you already have in your closet.

These guides aren’t intended to cause a mindless “add-to-cart” session—they’re designed to inspire you to see your closet differently. Of course, if something catches your eye, shoppable links are there for your convenience.

Browse, recreate, remix. That’s how effortless holiday style starts.
